Action is part of international campaign against ExxonMobil over its sabotage of international efforts to stop global warming

Protest in Luxembourg

From Greenpeace: LUXEMBOURG - More than 600 activists from around the world are shutting down oil company ExxonMobil in the European country of Luxembourg today, in a Greenpeace protest against ExxonMobil’s sabotage of international efforts to protect the climate. Seven Americans are involved in the protests. Activists from 31 countries are present at every one of ExxonMobil’s 28 gas stations in Luxembourg - including the biggest ExxonMobil station in the world on the Luxembourg/German border. Protestors, some dressed in tiger suits and George Bush masks, are blocking vehicle access to gas pumps, locking on to equipment and handing out information to motorists. At each station, banners reading “Esso (ExxonMobil) No 1 climate criminal” have been hung.

The Luxembourg protest is taking place as 178 countries meet in India for the next round of talks on the Kyoto Protocol the only international agreement on protecting the climate. The U.S. is responsible for 25 percent of global warming pollution but, thanks to ExxonMobil and President Bush, will not be participating in the Kyoto talks.

“For the past decade ExxonMobil has been responsible for the blatant and sustained manipulation of U.S. and international policy in its crusade to de-rail international efforts to address global warming,” said Gary Cook, Greenpeace Climate Campaigner in the U.S. “If we are going to have any hope of saving the climate, we must stop ExxonMobil.”

ExxonMobil has done more than any other company to sabotage international global warming agreements. It has funded lobbying and PR campaigns to deceive the public and policy makers. It has refused to any mandatory cuts in global warming pollution.

“The Bush White House’s devotion to the ExxonMobil line on global warming is sparking a huge backlash in Europe and elsewhere” said Cook.

Luxembourg is the fuel pump of Europe because of its cheap gas. Drivers travel long distances to buy gas there. Participants in the protest have come from: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Herzgovina, Ireland, Israel, Italy , Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the USA, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.
